I signed up for a HYROX and I don't really know how to train for it. Where do I start? The good news is that HYROX never changes. It is eight 1km runs, each followed by one of eight stations in a fixed order, ending on 100 wall balls when your legs are already gone. That means you can train for exactly what is coming. Your trainer builds a plan backward from your race date, targets your weakest stations first, and pairs running with station work so you are ready for the fatigue, not just the movements.
I can run fine, but the stations wreck me (or I'm strong but the running kills me). Can you fix that? This is the most common HYROX gap, and it is very fixable. Most people are solid on one side and fall apart on the other. Your trainer finds which half is holding your time back, then builds the part you are missing: strength endurance for the sleds, carries and wall balls, or run conditioning if the running is what breaks down. You train both in balance instead of doubling down on what you are already good at.
I don't have a sled, ski erg, or wall ball at home. Can I still train over Zoom? Yes for most of it, with one honest caveat. A lot of HYROX training is running, wall balls, burpee broad jumps, lunges and carries, all of which your trainer can coach and scale at home with a ball, a sandbag, or dumbbells. The sled and ski erg are harder to replicate, so closer to race day your coach will point you to a gym session or two for those and program everything else around what you have. You get a real plan either way, not something you have to piece together alone.
I gas out halfway and my transitions fall apart. Can a coach really help with pacing? Yes, and this is where races are won and lost. HYROX does not test your wall balls, it tests your wall balls after seven kilometres and seven stations. Your trainer programs compromised work, running straight into station effort, so your body learns to hold pace under fatigue. They also drill the small things that quietly cost time, like your transitions and pacing your early runs so you are not blown up by station five.
My wall balls (or sled, or lunges) are a mess. Can you fix my technique over Zoom? Yes. During each live Zoom session your trainer watches you move through your camera and gives feedback in real time. On the movements that cost you reps and penalties, like wall-ball depth and target height, lunge mechanics, or burpee efficiency, they correct your form, cue your tempo, and clean up the technique that falls apart when you are tired. Unlike a recorded video or a fitness app, your trainer responds to what they can see in the moment.
Is HYROX even for me? I'm not a competitive athlete. It is built for you. HYROX is designed for everyday gym-goers as much as elite athletes, and the format is identical for everyone, just at a weight and pace that fit your division and level. Your trainer meets you where your fitness is now and builds you toward a finish you are proud of, whether that means simply crossing the line or chasing a specific time.
Can online training really help me stay consistent through a whole training block? Yes. Your sessions happen live with a real trainer who is waiting for you. You do not need to decide what workout to do, travel to a gym, or motivate yourself with an app. Your coach already knows the plan and guides you through it step by step. A HYROX build is weeks of consistent work toward one date, and that standing appointment is what keeps you showing up across the whole block, not just the first two weeks.
What if my energy changes from day to day? That is completely normal. Your trainer adjusts the workout based on how you feel that day. On some days, you may be ready for more strength work. On others, the right choice may be a gentler session focused on mobility, balance, or technique. You do not need to perform at the same level every time to make progress. Consistency matters more than intensity.
