I've lost count of how many times I "started." I'd binge YouTube, pick some routine, go hard for two weeks, miss a day, feel like a failure, and quit. Then hate myself for a few months and do it again.

What finally worked wasn't a better plan. It was having someone. I started training over Zoom with a coach who saw I couldn't do a real push-up and just started me on wall ones. She picked everything so I didn't have to. And she was there Tuesday and Thursday at 7, so I actually showed up. Eight months later I still train. I don't think about motivation anymore. It's just what I do now.

THE RIGHT PLAN GETS YOU STARTED. IT WON'T KEEP YOU GOING

You do need a plan, just not the "perfect" one. You need a simple one built for your level, so choosing it doesn't overwhelm you into never starting. But a plan alone gets skipped. What keeps beginners going is having someone make showing up the default.

WILLPOWER RUNS OUT. APPOINTMENTS DON'T

"Should I work out today?" is a question you lose most days. People who make it stick stop asking it, and turn training into a fixed appointment, like brushing your teeth. Much easier when someone's waiting for you.
